What Do You Do When Your Vet Gives you Wrong Information?

We recently moved so of course that meant finding a new vet for Logan.  His previous vet was a no appointment, first-come-first-serve type of vet.  This was fine with us because Logan doesn't have any conditions that need continuous care, and the doctors seemed to be very knowledgeable.  So we used this vet for his check-ups and groomings.  We did however have Logan on one medication, Revolution, because at one point (when he was homeless) he did have heartworms. He had been free and clear of heartworms for about 8 months when my vet told me that Logan no longer needed the medication,"just a simple flea and tick repellant will do" he said.

So it was time for Logan's vaccines with the new vet.  During the exam the doctor asked about heartworm prevention and I proceeded to tell him what the last vet told me.  You could imagine the look on his face, which in turn became the look on my face as he explained that dog should ALWAYS be on some type of heartworm prevention.  I was floored because I trusted the advice of the doctor.  My disbelief soon progressed into anger, but at that point there was no to much I could do but get my baby back on his meds as soon as possible.  I fault myself because I am usually much more diligent a when it comes to any information I am given, but I relied on the "expert".

The moral of the story is: Do your own research. Just as we would do with our own health, we need to guard our pet's health.

Here is a link to more information on heartworms.

I would like to thank Centerville Animal Hospital for getting us all fixed up!
